Since apps occupy the entire screen, you'll first have to swipe up just to expose the status bar. Even something a simple as checking the time requires action from the user if inside an app. Far too often you are required to do too many swipes and button presses to get to information that should be easily accessible.
This particular gripe occurs throughout BlackBerry 10. Also, opening a Twitter or Facebook notification through the Hub will send you to an alternate version of the app, and going from there to view the message through the official client requires another tap of the screen. For example, if you get a notification through Facebook or Twitter, checking the app first will not clear the notification count within the BlackBerry Hub, essentially forcing you to read the message twice - even though the social networks are baked into the OS and developed by BlackBerry. There are some odd disconnects between the Hub and apps though. Those with a single email address won't have any issues with this, but if you regularly check multiple accounts, it can be bothersome. Oddly, the Hub doesn't specify which email messages are tied to which inbox unless you open up said message. As the company has done in the past, the BlackBerry Hub features a unified inbox where you can see all of your notifications in one place. Here is where you'll see all of your connected inboxes, from text messages and email accounts to social networks and chat programs. Swiping halfway up then sliding your finger to the right will shoot you to the BlackBerry Hub. These can be reorganized however you please, and can be placed in folders for easy access. Moving your finger up halfway from the bottom will let you take a peek at your unread notifications, and continuing your finger's movement to the left will reveal your list of apps in 4 x 4 grids of icons. Swiping up from anywhere in the operating system pulls up a maximum of eight Active Tiles - each of which represent your most recently used apps that, when tapped, pull up the app in the exact state that it was when you left it.

Unlike Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, BlackBerry has opted for a button-less UI - something we haven't seen since the days of Palm's webOS. The touch-optimized user interface is promising, although it can take time to get familiar with. Inside the BlackBerry Z10 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM that, when combined, make jumping around the new operating system a breeze. Color clarity and reproduction are both great, but the lack of an auto-adjust option for the screen's brightness can be annoying in dimly lit areas, and battery life surely takes a hit as a result of the omission. The BlackBerry Z10 is a well-built, sturdy phone with an exterior comprised almost entirely of plastic, aside from the slab of glass that adorns most of the front side of the device.
